Privacy
This page explains, in plain terms, what data we collect, why, and what you can do about it.
The short version
- If you subscribe, we keep your email address (and your name, if you give it) so we can send you Frontline Notes articles and updates, whenever we publish them.
- We can see whether our emails get opened and clicked, so we can learn whether our communications are effective.
- We don't sell your data and we don't share it for advertising purposes.
- Your data is is stored inside the EU. You can learn more about how Ghost (our publishing platform) complies with GDPR.
- You can leave, see what data of yours we hold, or ask to have it deleted, at any time – ask us on privacy@frontlinenotes.org or unsubscribe from our website.
Who is responsible for your data
Frontline Notes is incubated by Fundacja Inicjatywa Wschód, which is the organisation legally responsible for your data (the "data controller" in the language of the law).
What we collect, and why
If you subscribe to Frontline Notes, we collect your email address, and your name if you choose to give one. We use to send you articles and updates. You can withdraw that consent at any time.
When our emails reach you, our publishing platform records whether the email was opened and whether any links were clicked. This tells us whether what we're sharing is useful. It's tied to your subscription, and it stops collecting that information the moment you unsubscribe.
When you visit the website, our hosting platform keeps the usual technical records that any website needs to run safely (things like your browser type and IP address). We don't use this data to build individual profiles of our visitors, just aggregate statistics that help us understand our audience.
If you write for us, we'll hold the contact details you share so we can work with you on your piece, pay you, and stay in touch. We keep these for as long as we're working together and for our records.
If you donate, the payment itself is handled by WhyDonate and by Wschód, who route the funds. We don't see or store your card details. We may see that a donation was made and any message you choose to leave.
Who else handles your data
We're a small team, so we rely on a few trusted services to do this work. Each of them only handles your data on our instructions, and each is bound by an agreement to protect it:
- Ghost — the platform that hosts our site and sends our emails. Your subscription lives here.
- WhyDonate and Wschód — for donations and the money side.
We don't share your data with anyone else, and we don't hand it to advertisers, data brokers, or anyone looking to sell you something.
Where your data lives
All of it is stored inside the European Union.
How long we keep it
We keep your subscription details for as long as you're subscribed. When you unsubscribe, we remove you from the active list.
Your rights
The law gives you real control over your own data, You can:
- See what we hold about you.
- Correct anything that's wrong.
- Delete it (just ask us).
- Take it with you in a portable form.
- Object to, or limit, what we do with it.
- Change your mind about anything you consented to, at any time.
The fastest way to exercise most of these is the unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email. For anything else, write to privacy@frontlinenotes.org and we'll respond to you within a couple of weeks.
Cookies
Our site uses only the essential cookies needed to make it work: for example, to keep you logged in if you have an account. We don't use tracking cookies, and we don't run advertising or third-party surveillance tools. No consent banners needed.
If you think we've got something wrong
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first – we'd genuinely rather hear it and fix it. You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority, which for us is Poland's UODO.
Changes to this page
If we change how we handle data, we'll update this page and change the date below. If it's a significant change, we'll tell subscribers directly.
