Join our Editorial Committee

Across Europe, the far right is learning from each other, sharing tactics and investing in infrastructure and leadership. But much of the knowledge being generated by progressive movements across the continent remains siloed and unshared.

Frontline Notes exists to help close that gap. We support organisers and campaigners across Europe to share what they are learning about building power in real time, creating a space for honest reflection and exchange grounded in practice.

We publish short pieces from people doing the work – from fighting the far right and organising for climate justice to defending migrant rights and building democratic power. Contributors can write in their own language, every author is paid, and our editorial process supports people with valuable insights who may not think of themselves as writers.

The role of the Editorial Committee

We are looking to recruit a volunteer Editorial Committee of 6–8 people to help us find and commission great contributors, support writers through the editorial process, and expand the reach, networks and perspectives that shape Frontline Notes.

This is a practical, hands on role rather than a traditional advisory committee. Members will contribute in different ways depending on their skills, networks, languages and interests.

Members might contribute through:

  • Scouting and commissioning: spotting interesting writers, stories and ideas; suggesting potential commissions; making introductions; and helping us reach people and communities we might otherwise miss.
  • Editing support: helping contributors develop an idea or draft, particularly writers who may have less experience of writing for publication.
  • Language and translation: supporting non-English submissions, translating or reviewing translations, and helping us work well with contributors who don't primarily write in English.
  • Expert input: advising on particular pieces or potential commissions where you have relevant political, regional, movement or subject expertise.
  • Reach: helping published work travel through relevant communities, movements and networks.

We don't expect every member to do all of these things. We want to build a committee whose combined skills, experiences and networks give Frontline Notes greater reach and capacity.

What we're looking for

You don't need to be a professional journalist, editor or issue expert.

We're particularly interested in people who bring one or more of the following:

  • Strong relationships with movements, organisers, communities or networks.
  • An instinct for interesting people, stories and ideas that deserve a wider audience.
  • Experience editing or supporting other people to develop their writing.
  • Fluency in languages other than English and an interest in translation or multilingual publishing.
  • Knowledge or connections rooted in particular regions, communities or political contexts.
  • Perspectives and networks that are often underrepresented in mainstream climate and political media.
  • A willingness to contribute practically and collaboratively.

Across the committee as a whole, we want a strong mix of geographies, languages, movement experiences, generations, perspectives and editorial skills.

Expected commitment

We want this to be a meaningful but manageable volunteer commitment.

Members will be asked to:

  • Join a 90 min Editorial Committee meeting every 6 weeks.
  • Keep an eye out for potential writers, stories and ideas and share them with us.
  • Take on occasional pieces of work such as editing a draft, supporting a translation, making an introduction or helping develop a commission, depending on your interests and availability.
  • Be open about what you do and don't have capacity to take on.

We expect the role to average around 4-5 hours per month, including meetings. Members are not expected to respond to every request or work on every piece.

How to apply

If you're interested in joining the Editorial Committee, email us with a short expression of interest telling us:

  1. Why you're interested in Frontline Notes.
  2. Which parts of the role you'd most like to contribute to
  3. What perspectives, communities, networks, regions or languages you would bring to the committee.

This doesn't need to be a formal application, a few paragraphs is plenty.

We'll select members based on the overall mix of skills, perspectives, networks, geographies and languages across the committee, rather than looking for everyone to bring the same experience.

We're particularly keen to hear from people who may not think of themselves as part of traditional journalism or publishing spaces, but who are connected to important people, ideas and experiences that deserve a wider audience.
